I was looking thru the Jameco Electronics catalog for small motors when I found this: Jameco Puzzler 11. This is a Forrest Mims design that replaces a potentiometer with an LED shining through a variable aperature into a CdS photocell. Got to wondering if this could be implemented for the speed control pot in a WiaD or Modular. Maybe some of you electron pushers could take a look and give us a report.

I've made replacement pots from regular Clarostat 53C1 pots for the WiaD drive - used the old hardware (stems & wipers for the tandem arrangement) and trace repair paint over the windings as appropriate to short half of each pot's travel. One pair seems to have been working OK for a while now.

I don't know if Monarch used the 4W wire wound pots because they could be shorted or because they were 4W, never measured the current. If the current is low enough a pair of programmable pots could be used.
