EE crossfeed clutch goop

While taking apart my EE's apron, I discovered that its crossfeed clutch is 'lubricated' with an unusual looking substance. It is a dark red grease, the color of iron oxide. It seems to be used only on the cross feed clutch. I need to clean out the entire apron cavity, since the oil had coagulated to sludge. If I do that, it would also wash away this red mystery lube. Since the clutch presumably needs this stuff, I'd like to replace it. Anyone know what it is?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers!

Don't know what the red stuff is, but it doesn't belong there. The only lube in the apron is oil. While you got the apron apart, make sure the pump is working. It oils the apron internally, the half nuts, the cross slide ways and the carriage slides.
