I've heard of it being done - that there is enough room for 1/2". It's currently 7/16", so an extra 1/16" will probably not be noticeable. You'll also need to redo the carriage nut. If you have the proper tap, you could probably just drill and retap the nut to size. You do know that it is a left-handed screw, don't you?

I did that change on my 9 Jr. lathe. You will probably find that you can purchase Acme threaded rod in "standard" or "hi-precision" specifications. Sort of up to you which you want to pay for.
