.. and while I am posting ...

My '41 10L spindle cone pulley has been rattling like an old freight carriage. The pinion gear end seems pretty good, but there is a lot of wear at the bull gear end.

Ted's response re clearance in the following thread was very interesting:

I had the spindle out to check whether the large end of the cone was bushed or plain CI (I couldn't recall) so I thought while it was apart I'd shim it up to get it back to spec. Mine was 0.008", not 0.002". It has made an *amazing* difference. NO rattle at all and much less play. The cone pulley is still worn but I guess 0.002" doesn't give much room for things to slap about.

I just cut two circles of 0.003" shim and put them between the cone and the bull gear and checked to make sure the bull gear pin still engaged. All good.

I think it is probably better to shim between the pulley and the thrust bearing and not the bull gear so I may change that, but the end result will be the same.

At any rate, an excellent result for a couple of hours work.

Lathe is much quieter so now I have loads of other noises to worry about! :-)

Greg.
