10L tailstock nut question

Hello everyone! I'm brand new here with very little experience with lathes, but I just purchased a 1981-ish (I think) 10L.. I just took apart and cleaned the tailstock. Upon putting the tailstock together, I noticed that the zero mark on the tailstock faces down to the cabinet, where I can't see the zero mark. Did South Bend make shims that would help a guy index the zero mark on the tailstock nut face up?

Is it clean? Any swarf in the way? Pictures?

They were marked after assembly, so there would be no need for shims. Perhaps you have a "frankenlathe".

You could always remark the zero.

SLK001, I think you're completely correct in the assumption that I might have some Frankenlathe parts.

I bought the lathe on auction from a local high school. One of the lathes for sale was a scrapped out parts lathe, so I'm quite sure you hit the nail on the head.

It also helps to know that the 0 mark was done after the nut was installed.

Thank you for the reply. That should help me from driving myself nuts!

if you want to make it "clock" to the right position....its easy to figure how thick a shim you need....say its a 16tpi thread...1/16=.0625" so say you need a 1/2 turn to get where you want .0625/2=.03125"
so a shim .03125" thick does the trick.

any given thread is its own micrometer.
