13" south bend threading issues

So we have An old (mid 60's I believe) 13" south bend lathe at work. I'm the only one interested in learning to use it. I've spent 2 weeks just learning the basics of turning stuff down and decided to start threading.
My problem is that it doesn't seem to bee cutting the right thread patterns. With the large screw gear and both tumblers set to their fastest position I was only getting 26-28 threads per inch. So today I swapped it to the smaller screw gear with the same tumbler positions and could only get 18 threads per inch. Am I missing something here?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you
