14-1/2 gear info needed

Hello all,

I’m in need of the tooth count for the reverse gear on the foreword/Reverse feed lever. Mine was not there when I bought the machine, and I need to make another. The south bend parts book lists two different part numbers for these gears, so I know they are not the same tooth count. The shafts they ride on share the same part number, so the difference isn’t there, so it has to be the tooth count.

It’s a double tumbler machine, Catalog no. CL185L with an 8’ bed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Wyatt

You can figure this out yourself. Measure the center-to-center distance between the two gear shafts, and get the count of teeth and outer diameter on the gear you have.

You can figure this out yourself

How that works

Lets say the two gears were 14 DP. Lets say they were 27 and 28 tooth respectively. PD on the 27 will be 1.9286 and on the 28 will be 2.000

Center distance becomes 1.9643 - for the reason that half of each PD added together equals that number - or if you like, both PDs added together divided by 2 also equals that number

Finding DP on the gear you have:

Measure OD - no burrs, or raised metal

Count teeth, add TWO to that count

Divide first into second

Example:

2.125" OD
32 teeth
34 / 2.125 = 16 DP

An incidentally the PD is 2.000

(Info: PD = Pitch Diameter...DP = Diametral Pitch)
