Have been fighting this problem for more than 30 years now: parts shrink as I get closer to headstock to the tune of 3 to 4 thou in the space of 3 inches. Test bar in spindle taper moves the dti mounted on saddle the same relative amount. This happens turning between collet and tailstock center. Have leveled lathe numerous times with a .0005 Starrett level. Had the spindle taper reground some years back and it has no perceptible runout. New bearings added at that time and adjusted according th SBL instructions. Did the lift test with dti just this afternoon and front and rear bearings within spec BUT did notice side to side play at end of test bar was 5 or 6 thou both directions. This shouldn't matter with work piece running in tailstock center I wouldn't think but I'm not sure. Have also tried twisting the bed by adjusting 6" leveling pads but, although I can slightly change the runout I can't get close. Any ideas out there???
