I have a like new Bison 6" D1-4 3 jaw chuck that is not true. It sat around for many years and the grease was so hard I could barely open and close the chuck! I stripped it down, cleaned it up and put it all back together. But now it's out of true a few thou?

I am almost certain I put everything back in it's original place. So now I'm wondering if I pull it off the back plate and turn it 120 deg. and try that?

Is it wishful thinking that it should do better than what it is?

Thanks

How far out of true? You know 3 jaw chucks are not perfectly true or repeatable? Have you checked by rotating which pin goes into which hole? Was the backplate machined on that lathe?

Remove backplate from chuck, see if it will run true, change pin locations to see if one is best, if none are best it probably needs to be trued up on your machine.

Well I think the back plate came with the chuck from Bison all those years ago.

I'm thinking there is a systematic place to start checking things when it comes to these problems.

I will make some tests to see how off it really is.
