Attempting an idler gear broken tooth repair.

Of the few parts that required replacing on my recent SB 13 rebuild (aside from a blown capacitor on the motor), only one part was actually broken, a missing tooth on the idler gear. All other replacements were from wear. A search for a replacement idler, here and on theBay, turned up nothing, so a DIY repair was necessary. A single tooth was salvaged from an old damaged Bull gear, carefully cut and sized to fit snugly into a matching slot in the idler. A small copper shim was inserted on one side to properly space the "implant" and prevent it from moving during the brazing process. A friend did the actual brazing. After cooling, the area was cleaned up using an angle grinder and file to restore the proper shape, a light buff with a wire wheel took off any sharp edges. During a brief test run, a very mild "thud" was heard, a quick tweak with a file corrected that. I'm very pleased with the results, wouldn't hesitate to do it again if necessary.
Hope this encourages someone to give it a shot.:)

Wow that's beautiful workmanship! Thanks for sharing! I'll have to file that one away in the "bag of tricks"....

I would file it in the same bag if only I had to skill to do it! This trick would be a way to make a damaged gear a destroyed gear in my hands. Good job it looks great

Great job on the repair. Most of the time, I have seen people just braze up the void, and then re-cut on a dividing head.
