Bad Facing cuts

Sooo I’ve been working in this 9a for
fun for a while and it’s never taken a proper facing cut. I have to hold the hand wheel or the tool gets pushed out toward the tail stock. I have no idea what causes this? Anyone have any thoughts?

Agree with Carl, above. Heavy facing cuts will push the carriage back, unless it is locked. For the final cut, always lock the carriage for a flat face.

Tool geometry, edge sharpness cross slide gibbs, something not tight, saddle not flat/tight to bed ways, and more so could be a ton of problems. Guess I would put an indicator to the tool post off the chuck and give everything a two-hand push pull/and twist this way and that. And then lock the bed clamp and do that again. Also would give the chuck a push pull under an indicator.

Perfectly normal...carriage on a 9a is too light to expect it to stay put against cutting pressure, lock 'er down.

They are great little machines, but you gotta dance to their tune.:)
