Calling all South Bend 11's

OKay you owners of the 11's. Lets see if we can make this the go to thread for us! Everybody wants a heavy 10 and the 9's have shear numbers. We 11 owners are the redheaded step-childern at the family reunion. Nobody seems to know much about us.
If you have pictures or helpful hints. Let's try to put them here in one spot. I'll post some pictures and story of my unrestored 1922 later.
 
I'll help kick this one off with some pics of my beloved "red-headed step child" :D It's a 1939 Model 411A.

Sounds good to me

I have not done much to mine yet.
Had it shipped from New York to Alabama.
There was a slight mishap during shippment. the local driver did not put a strap on the machine. You know there might be a problem when you expect tailgate deliveryand
the driver opens the door on the trailer and asks if you have a chain to get it off.
I have pitures of mine from the seller. right now I have it setting under a tarp.
the pitures I have are from the seller and one taken the frist time they tried to deliver.
As you can see it has a bracket to hold the motor and it has been fitted with a gear box.
in time I want to put a step pulley on it. a lot of the one machines that were converted from the line shaft to motor were done like this.
Is there any body who can cast iron.
We could make a pratern for the steady rest and follower rest, and other parts.
it has been a while since I have worked on a o serries lathe.
I helped my dad restore his but this was back about 1968.
he had a 14 " with a 8' bed. It had a full set of change gears.
Is there any body who can tell me how to take the quick change gear box apart.
I do not was to do more damage then is all ready done.
Has any one made any drawings or the parts.
If need be I can keep them on my web site.

All right here is my 1922 model 27-b lathe. Only thing i've done to it thus far is redo the name plates.
If anybody can help me. I don't know how to get a thread over here. It is on the serial number thread, post #533.

Metalcarnage (Ron) Thanks for getting things started. Great looking lathe, looks alot more solid than my 1922.
Roland I hope things aren't broke up to bad! I can't believe somebody would ship it on such a narrow pallet. Keep us posted.

Model 27-b, year 1922, casting date 1921
Spindle 1 5/8"-8, 7/8" thru hole
Change gears 5/8" wide, 5/8" bore, .190 keyway, 16DP
lead screw 7/8"-8
Cross feed screw 1/2"-10 left hand
Tail stock #2MT, hold down bolt 5/8"-11, wrench for tail stock nut 1 1/16".

So far the best information I've found (it's for a 10L but it'll be as close as you get) is in Steve Well's SB rebuild manual: ebay link - Rebuild manual for lathe South Bend 10L Be sure to check out Steve's website as well: http://www.wswells.com/ A lot of good information there.

Here's a pic of my factory card. Judging by the "part" numbers one would think that other lathes shared some of their major components at least.

I will post the info on the bed, apron, and saddle for mine. Mine is however a Frankenstein lathe, in that, it has a Champion Blower & Forge, 10" headstock, and tailstock. I do have to use the Champion gear chart for threading.

Bed casting date of Aug 1922, Shipping date of Nov 1922
Catalog # 27 Model "O" Change gear
bed 4'
Ser # 28406
Leed screw 7/8-8
cross feed 1/2-10 left hand acme thread
compound 1/2-20 right hand sharp thread
Also Leed screw nut, on change gear end is 1/2-12 thread

Originally sold to a mining supply company in Denver, CO. How it got to Las Vegas, NV, or when the headstock was changed, I have no idea.

Southbend group

In checking my email, I see that some one is sending a manual for the 1939 11 ' model O To the southbend users group for them to scan in and put into the data base.
hope they are able to get that manual it would be a big help.
My lathe is catolog number. 248-B the serial number Is 41090 #2mt on the tail stock.

Way wipers

Does any one know if the way wipers that hold the felts off a 9" our a 10 " will fit a 11'.
What size is the shaft on the carriage hand feed wheel,on the 10" is it possible it will fit a 11"

Any word on the manual? I've been on the SB users group and didn't see it.

Another 11 incher here. $100, was headed to the scrapper. A shim here and there, a new chuck, halfnuts, repairs and some paint, and she's good now.

Nice save! Classy looking machine you have there.

Sorry for the intrusion guys, but I'm helping a friend with a 9" 25-Y built in 1927, and trying to figure out whether the nut that fastens the star wheel knob for the clutch is LH or RH thread. Hoping that one of you will remember. I'll include a picture.

Misc. 11 parts for cost of postage

I have a few misc. parts from a 1920's SB 11 I parted out sometime ago - bed was too far gone for restoration. No change gears or steady/follow rests. Do have headstock clamps, headstock guards, nuts, bolts, carriage lock clamp (no bolt) hard to tell what all.. Available first come for the cost of shipping - (generally by USPS flat rate box). If you need something I'll be glad to see if I have it just send me a PM.
