Maybe someone will know what the "C" is about
344 is the underneath drive Model A - it is in the August 1946 Catalog 100-F

As far as I know, the C by itself means nothing.
CL = threaded spindle
CB = D1-4 Camlock spindle
CF = D1-6
CG = D1-8
From your catalog number, it's a threaded spindle, Model A, Under Motor Drive (344). The Z means it's a 3-1/2' bed. I am not sure about the trailing C.

I agree with Kevin. It is an incomplete "D" stamp. It looks nothing like the first "C" in the part number.
I think that nails it.
I thought it the lathe looked like a D.

I believe that it signifies that it is an UMD drive on a metal column bench with drawers.
