A website visitor e-mailed me with info on his wide 9, the more I checked, the more intrigued I became that this might be the one to have the S series headstock. I requested photos, and look what came in!
Its a 456-A, B version Standard change gear, HMD bench 9L, yep, 2-1/4 spindle side oiling Heavy 9.
Photo confirmed. Shipped 8/21/1939, made right in the same months as the start of the 10L.
South Bend internal docs lists 9/14/39 as the ending date of the 9L spindle 2-1/4 spindle.

Enjoy

Steve

I own one of those heavy 9's. It's a QC version with the cast iron motor base. Could
provide photo and serial number on request.

Yep! This is what it looks like, now warehoused in my garage under a tarp, with a heater inside the motor
housing for safe keeping. Only difference is the addition of a three phase motor and a VFD.

If those photos are good enough I'll just supply the serial number.

More photos to follow, but for now:

Serial number = 94191

From the nameplate:

Swing = 9 inch

Bed length = 3 foot

Catalog number = 159YB

Very Nice Jim,
I think this is only the 3rd one I've recorded with photos of the S series headstock.

I know a guy that has a wide 9 with the cast iron motor housing and solid tail stock leg. I did a little research and it was only made a couple years 38 39. He thought it was a 10L and wanted to trade me for my sececa falls 12". It has a very unique motor someone put in it. Variable speed by moving a lever which moves the brushes and even reverses and its 110v. Here are some pics.Resized_20180930_102848.jpgResized_20180930_102859.jpg

Sorry they're so small photos were taken with my phone no larger ones

There were several models of the wide bed or "letter series" 9 inch lathe in this time frame.
There was a CBUMD (cast base underneath motor drive)R series model 109 without tapered gibbs. There also
was a T series with tapered gibbs (model 109 also) these were both top oilers. There also were 2 models of the 159 cast base UMD, one was a T series 1 inch collet lathe with Top oiling headstock and one was an S series with side oiling headstock. The lathe in the photo is a top oiling headstock, if it has the 2-1/4 spindle it is a T series 159. If it has the small spindle and tapered gibbs it is a T series 109. If it does not have tapered gibbs and has the small spindle it is an R series 109.
