Was my Uncle's lathe, was owned by his father, bought new for automotive shop. I have the SB overhead clutch drive pulleys. Have chucks and toolbits and change gears, lots of old stuff that was with the lathe for 75 years. Bed is NOT scratched. Probably worn some, but you can't tell. No wear ridge like many develop. A real time capsule. Bronze bushing headstock with rare old 2 port Leukenheimer oiler. Steady rest too if I remember. Both sets of jaws for the 3 jaw chuck. Craftsman 4 jaw too. Rare belt drive toolpost grinder. $1600. Come get it.

Damn that's tempting. But I'm not in any position to right now, been out work on disability for a month. Kinda curious about the grinder though. I could see using it on my 9A. Did you ask George about advertising it on the other site, or linking to it here? Might get more bites that way.

That’s an oldie, it doesn’t have a gear box, no positive but I don’t see any power feeds, line shaft drive.

Yeah I think it’s older then 1928. It’s definitely not newer.

What’s the serial at the far right end of the bed, that’s how we identify it.

In the current economy I couldn’t say what it was worth but imho 5 years ago it would be between 300$-1000$ all depending on tooling and condition

Just the lathe without any tooling/chucks would run around 300-700$ on average.

That’s excluding special circumstances, condition would play A HUGE ROLL here with prime CLEAN or very rare examples selling for far more.

The grinder attachment is a BAD sign, grinding leaves grit all over the place and if you don’t protect the ways COMPLETELY that grinding grit will TEAR the ways up VERY VERY FAST!.

grinder attachments used incorrectly have been known to destroy even brand new lathes

Mover your saddle into the red zone in this picture, lightly apply the saddle lock and then move the saddle to the right. If it gets tighter or even stops then you have some wear In the ways.

You can also put a straight edge to the side of the ways (in the red zone) with a flash light behind to see how much wear is in the way like so

Doing this would get you the best most fair price and the most interest in your machine, most who would be interested are gonna want to know the wear before making a trip to get it

Although it does lack a lot of functional features from being old,
that could probably be made into a nice display piece of an early SB lathe.
(I do like the brand of beer under the tailstock!)

It is an $800 SouthBend lathe.
Not a $20,000 MoriSeiki lathe.
If you want to come look at it,
bring your ruler and your flash
light. By all means. It comes
with the not often seen toolpost
grinder attachment. Does that
mean it was used with haste and
the ways are worn to shlt ?
Of coarse freaking not. If I for
one minute believed that including
the grinder attachment was going
to detract from the desirability
of this lathe, I would have tossed
it in the trash. But I thought
someone would like to have it.
If you feel that you need a pic
of the ways and don't want the
lathe because it comes with a
grinder attachment, don't buy it
dude. But making assertions that
are just a cloud in the sky is
a tactic that people who argue
politics like to use. Take one
small point, that may or may not
apply in a small way to the subject
at hand, then hyper focus on that
point and use it to discredit the
whole topic, and use it to destroy
the other persons point or topic.
I do appreciate your well intention
of making recommendations to potentially
help sell the machine. But I really don't
care to go to that much trouble. How
many pictures do you see on ebay or
FB marketplace with close up way pics?
This is not a full service auction site.
It is free to look, free to pass it by.
Again, if it was a $20,000 lathe, then
ya, sure. But I think you are a little
too down in the weeds on your expectations
here. It comes from a consumer driven
society, where they spread such horse
shlt like the customer is always right.
I kept me receipt, so you owe me a new one.
Nnnnnnno. Not reality. Come look at my
lathe. If you don't like it, no hard
feelings. I will even give you one of
my beers in the shop for stopping by.
We can even shoot the shlt and talk
shop a bit. I'm a pretty nice guy.
But if you want a nice condition and
original lathe, with the factory
overhead shaft, and the factory TP
grinder, it is a good specimen.
It is light years better than the
10" Atlaas with babbit bearings that
I started off with. I am sure it
will make the right person an
awesome lathe. Peace.

Doozer, I gotta ask again: do you think it would be worth it to ask George about running an ad posting over there? Like I said before, I would love to but this ain't been a good year for me at all. Not even a banner ad, just permission to make a regular post about it. Or check on the antique machinery forum here.

Well what a response D/<K head. You fall out of bed on the wrong side?

I was NEVER interested in it.

It takes 5-7 minutes to take a pic of the ways with a ruler.
Even less to lock the saddle and slide it and maybe save someone the time/trouble of driving HOURS to see it

it’s NOT FREE TO PASS if your paying gas and time to drive hours to look.

Here I’ll save you the trouble of investing anymore time in it

Throw it away.

No skin off my back.

Right.......
Everybody can start throwing out those Du-more tool post grinders too! Better yet, just send them to me and I'll pay shipping.

Including the grinder with the lathe is a great idea:D

When I bought my lathe, the pics showed it in pieces. The seller was asking 40% more than Doozer is. The seller re-assembled it before I got there after a 6-hr drive. Guess what, it was in great shape. Sometimes you gotta take the leap and believe the guy. Nobody's dumb enough to make you drive that far for nothing.

Besides if somebody's gonna worry about the condition of the ways on a 100-yr old SB, then maybe they should just go to Harbor Freight and get a brand-new lathe for the same money. They'll even have enough change left over for all the accessories and a Happy Meal.
