I got a 5MT backplate along with some other stuff.

I'm looking for a Heavy 10, and I think the spindle is some sort of proprietary "short" 5MT.

Would I be able to use a 5MT shank in the spindle?

Just trying to decide if I should keep this for later use.

The H10 spindle is a proprietary taper. It has the same taper as a MT#3, but has a larger diameter (1.628" at the large end). Your MT#5 backplate won't properly fit (if at all).

The proprietary South Bend Taper No3 is close to #5mt, but shorter. There's some other threads on it here somewhere with specs, but you need to search it up.

I believe at least some if not all heavy 10's use it. If you look at Miller fabrication's webpage down to test bars it lists it from 10's to 16":

The mt5 is not interchangeable with it though. I do recall a thread here maybe from 2012 or earlier where a guy had one crammed in in claimed it was ok :D, but no, its not.

I've got both South Bend No3 and 5mt test bars, the mt5 isn't going in there.

Some specs of South Bend tapers here:

Going back a little further in the thread to post #96 there some discussion on the tapers too:

I believe you'll find that a #5 Morse taper fits some of the 12" Chinese lathes--Grizzly Gunsmith lathe for example. It's not going to fit a South Bend 10"
