Help with 1965 9" Model A documentation and spindle question

We are looking for an understanding of the documents that were originally shipped with the lathe, when it left the factory. The serial number is
53882NKR9, and the certificate shows the lathe was shipped with two manuals. Their catalog numbers are CL344AD, and CE3228. The machine was made in 1965.

The first question is - what are these manuals, or what was contained in the manual? Would either of these two manuals contain an exploded parts diagram or list? The one manual that did come with the machine ( when acquired from the estate of its first owner) is catalog CE3450. This seems to be about how to use the machine.

We'd like to pull out the spindle, to check the condition of the main bearings, and also to replace the oil wicks. We have acquired the Rebuild Kit from Grizzly, which has all the bits and pieces necessary to replace all the wicks, etc. We've watched several videos on assembly and disassembly of the spindle, and feel comfortable with what we've viewed. The machins that were in the videos are much older, dating back to 1938 or so. These machines do not have any spindle bearings, other than the cast iron head-stock. We've also looked at several S.B. documents that shows split bearing liners being used around 1965.

The second question is - what kind of spindle bearing configuration should we anticipate ? Would a 1965 9" Model A have such spindle bearings?

The last question relates to a disk ( about 2 1/4" or so, attached to the spindle nose somehow. What is this disk for, and is it pressed onto the front end of the spindle? Should it be removed before pulling the spindle out or just left in place?

Thanks for any help, Mike Priwer [email protected]

Grizzly has refelt kits? That's news to me.

The two "manuals" are probably, How To Run A Lathe and the parts manual.

As for the disk, I would bet that it is a "stickum" type of adhesive paper stuck to the spindle register to minimize chuck sticking on the lathe. Post photos of what you are talking about.

That disk is pressed on. It's not structural or required for chuck registration. It's just a shield to keep swarf out of the front spindle bearing.

The spindle comes out that end and you just leave that ring in place.
