How to drill out a broken gear box pin

I bought a new straight pin from McMaster.com for the banjo shaft straight pin on my 9A gear box.
It must be poor quality metal. A few taps and the pin broke of inside the hole. No way to pull it out.
I first tried to remove it with several punches. It does not budge.

It started to drill it out but it not progressing. I was using the a hand drill . I though it might be harder to align on the drill press.
I came here for some sage advice.

Will a file nick the broken off piece of the new pin? If not too hard to drill. Where in AZ are you Phoenix? And you sure the orignal pin was not a taper pin?

what size pin diameter ?
thru hole?
can you take a picture of the broken pin & shaft

yikes

is it possible heat the shaft with a propane torch with out catching every thing on fire?
soak the pin with wD40 then punch it out
don't know nothing about your machine, but done a lot mechanic work.

If the pin you are talking about is the one that holds the brass bushing in place, yes it is a straight pin from the factory. I have some with a taper pin but someone put a taper pin in it's place. If it is the collar pin on the end it is a taper pin. Both should drill out easily. They are soft unless someone used a drill bit for a pin. Post a few pics of what you have and we can offer more help.
