I just found a older south bend 4 1/2 locally for sale I’m up in Edmonton Alberta . There is no catalog number on the spec plate but does say 4 1/2 length. I’d like to find out what year it is I’m thinking maybe 1940s? Owner says bed ways are in great shape and comes with 3 and 4 jaw chucks , steady rest , tail stock drill chuck and live center looks like and bunch of other odds and ends . A manual doesn’t look original says 10-k .
He’s asking $2500 which seems high but I’m not totally sure? For up here maybe hes close on price? I want something for my home shop to make the small odd bushing or smaller diameter axles or shafts . I currently use our lathes at work for the odd home project but plan on retiring in 5 years or so and want to be set up at home for the odd small job . Any info would be great and a value amount . I’ll attach a few pics. Thx in advance for any info

Your photographs are too clear. We don't like making identifications with that much detail. Perhaps you could post your pics with even less resolution. And make them smaller - large photos are just so boring.

These pics are terrible I'll try getting some better ones

It is a 10k. It looks to be either a model CL770R, or CL670R, depending on the type of belt. The model number SHOULD be stamped on the plate on the gearbox. Don't know why it isn't, unless it is a replacement plate.

As far as age goes, the 10K was introduced about 1952. Best age determinate is the serial number. It's stamped on top of the bed at the tailstock end, between the front vee way and the flat way.

Looks like it has a taper attachment. I'd consider that a plus, maybe a big plus.

And I see John has dealt with the serial number in the Antiques and History section. Please let us know what it is. Probably fair to suggest your additional posts on this machine be posted here, apt to yield more responses.

Right on thanks for info guys. I'll look into serial number. The guy is about 2 hours away from me I'm probably going to have a look at it later this week. What do you guys think its worth price wise? It does have the taper attachment and he tells me everything works great. Im thinking $2000 on the high side and $1500 on the low side. I doubt he will drop that much though on price. I think the only reason it isnt sold yet is because hes 2 hours from the city out in the country
Shes old but I prefer the old iron compared to the chinese stuff. Ive got some old rockwell stuff band saw, belt sander and drill press and its awesome old iron luv it.

From what i see on south bends site K = light 10"
A = quick change gear box, gear friction apron , under motor drive
R = regular spindle hole , standard swing

LOL! Edited for the humor impaired.

Those letters don't mean what you think they mean. Your lathe is clearly not an under motor drive. Also (AFAIK), the 10k only had one spindle hole size. You probably looked at the 10L letter definitions.

Much later than my serial book goes - 12970K as of '67

You could scroll thru here if you like - see how far it goes

South Bend Lathe Serial Numbers

According to my _Serial Number Reference Book_ 11th ed. (1994) s/n 32326K was built 1974-1975. This reference shows a serial number for each year. I'm not sure if that's the first serial number for that year or the last. Also not sure if this reference is consistent in that respect for all machine tool builders listed. Serial number given for 1974 is 31783K, for 1975, 32783K. Caveat: This reference is said to contain errors.

The picture is too small for me to read the s/n; when enlarged it's not clear. Is my memory wrong, isn't the South Bend serial number usually between the front vee way and flat way and not between the two vee ways as appears to be the case here?

No longer have my heavy 10 so can't go check.

Thx for info I came up with same timeline from lathes with close to the same serial numbers. Early 1970s

I’m going to pick it up tomorrow :)

Picked lathe up today. Thing runs smooth, bed and everything else appears to be in great shape. Found the original invoice from 1974 with all the paperwork lathe was purchased here in Edmonton and spent most of its life a couple hours away in Loydminister . Super happy with purchase
