That's a very nice looking lathe from the pictures. I do have a question if anyone knows the answer. What are the two t-slots on either side of the apron for?

T slots are for whatever you want them to be for...line booring being the most common use...a failure of later models not to keep them IMO.

also that is an N series, which again IMO is the superior apron design...simple push/pull to select cross or long feed and the feed rates for cross and long are approx the same instead of the IMO goofy major reduction for the cross feed.

Full of opinions, aren't I?

In the old days a machinist would clamp , say a cylinder , to the carriage via the "T" slots then set up a boring bar between the head stock and tailstock centers. Then he would traverse the cylinder past the rotating tool to bore the cylinder to size by using the carriage feed.

I'm with Iwannanew10K, they should have kept the slots.
In the new days, it's not too hard to make a duplicate of the plug on the bottom of the compound that goes in the cross slide, and fasten some aluminum tooling plate to it.
