The only likely reason a SB lathe would be missing its serial number is if the bed has been reground significantly.

All the way to the tailstock end, between the flat surface at the front of the tailstock slide, and the front V way. Clean the recessed surface between those two ways about ten inches in from the end. To the end.

Get one of those small wire brushes about the size of a tooth brush.Brush the area where the number is supposed to be.Old dirt doesn't come off easily.Especially imbeded.
