Perhaps a stupid question...

Plain bearing shims

Hello chaps. Well I have made the shims, but should they also go into the bearings? Or just to the outside of them?

I see what looks like a locking screw opposite the slot, which i would think keeps bearing from potentially spinning in bore.

My preference would be halfway into bearing's edge, but not too close to spindle, to avoid incidental contact. But outside of that i think you'll be fine either way.

The only other consideration i see may be oil drips, or whether oil may collect there and drip or run to one side, or the other.

I would clean up the shim area, put in the spindle, and then crank down the tightening screw just to get a good feel on the spindle, and then consider plus about .005 would be my rough size. A feeler set would be good for this teat.

OT: but should they also go into the bearings? Or just to the outside of them?.. I'm not sure about that.

Yes, It was kind of a stupid thread title.

"Plane-bearing shim ?" might have been an OK title.

Oh, a good feel means that you cant easily bump it with the but of a hammer handle, not feeling the hold down go tight.
