SB 9" B Apron felt wick question

Hello friends.

I've searched for this answer and can't find it.

I've disassembled the apron for overhaul.

The book says to replace the felt wick in the cross feed drive and traverse gear shafts. It shows a photo of felt wicks in a slot that seems to run part way down the shaft then into a hole. It also says they might not be there and don't worry about it if they are not present.

My shafts have tunnels drilled from the face of the shaft and diagonally through the shaft, exiting out the side.

When I took it apart, there were no felt wicks in those tunnels.

Should those tunnels have felt wicks? Has anyone ever seen that?

Sorry. I can't post a photo right now. I will try to get one tomorrow.

What 9" (give us the model number)?

You really do need to post pictures with your inquiry.

My guess is that it is either an early oil passageway to oil the shaft installed by the factory or a customer mod to accomplish the same. I would say that "yes" put the felt in the hole. The felt will act as an oil reservoir and slowly seep oil onto the shaft. Without a felt to hold the oil, you will have to oil the shaft much more frequent.
