SB 9a spindle required?

Hi everybody,

I am in the process of restoring a 1948 SB 9A.
The headstock rear spindle bearing shows excessive play.
I measured the rear journal at 1.360". I believe it should be 1.374 or close.
The journal looks very smooth no gauging or obvious wear, so does the segmented bearing.
I can not imagine what has been done to this spindle in the past.
So I am in need of a replacement spindle.
Can anybody help?

Hans. I maybe able to help you out. I have a few spindles for 9A's. Will check the dimensions you provided and get back to you. A picture of yours and the other dims would be nice.

Went out to the shed and dug up a headstock. It has the cast segmented bearings. The spindle is in excellent shape. No scarring or worn grooves. The small end measures 1.3746 give or take .0002. The large end is 1.811.
The gear on the end is nice. Threads for the spindle are nice too. I am in NE Pa. It's yours if you want it.

How does a spindle wear so much without the bearings showing severe wear also?

Hi tommy1010,

I will gladly accept your offer, marvelous.
Will take some more measurements but have limited tools to accurately measure the bore.
The model is 744Y, a v-belt. The head stock is a OH112 but is probably not original.
Thank you very much, it is very hard to obtain parts for SB this side of the pond.

Some measurements.
Bores: 1.812 and 1.374 (bolts loose)
Journals: 1.809 and 1.360
I have zero history for this lathe.
I presume a previous owner must have had the rear journal ground down.
I believe this head stock was acquired at some later stage.
There were no shims in the rear bearing.

Trying some pics.

I am confident your spindle is the correct one for this headstock.
The main question now is, are you prepared to post it to the Netherlands?
