    South Bend 13" x 8' bed

    S/N#: 27790

Appears to be a line drive model. There is a Lima conversion kit attached - metal casting and 3HP motor and 4 speed gearbox mounted overhead.

Casting says 1922 which is consistent with the S/N.

Steve, thanks for the link, I was also able to stumble on that info a little while ago as well. I was scratching my head for a bit wondering if someone had modified the spindle (unlikely, but with the age of the lathe never say never...).
The lathe does have the friction clutch. I have not had the chance to test it and see if it works however. I now have the lathe mostly back together and hopefully will be able to run it again. Maybe then I'll be able to get you a picture as well.
On your S/N page, s/n G25072 is pretty similar, mainly without the QCGB and a different (homemade) countershaft arrangement.

Just bought a 9A, SN 101372 (Mid 1940?) Cat 444-Z. Don't have the card for it, but found a sheet online that says they started 1940 with SN 100000.

    Thank you,
Yes, shipped July or August of 1940,
1940 serial numbers start closer to 95500 or so, I don't have a Jan number yet.

The # on a lathe I'm interested in is 167RKL7 stamped on the tailstock end. The catalog # is 8187AN. The bed is 7" wide but it has the small bore spindle, so I assume it's a R model. Like to know year of lathe.

Based on the data here: South Bend Lathe Serial Numbers
    I'd say that's a 1947 10L

Finally got around to to posting numbers for my SB 13”. Cat# CL8145B SER.# 2955TKL10. 5 foot bed Year ( 1952 - 1954 ) I removed a equipment number plate from Wesleyan University , Middletown CT. The lathe is in super shape, other than very dry & dirty. I’m guessing that the university was the original owner
