I have a south bend with numbers stamped. There are two sets of numbers.
    MC 1555 A-1
    133603
I think the second set are the serial number but I am curious of what the MC 1555 A-1 represents.

I thought I posted this or maybe sent it directly to Steve Wells a couple of years ago, but I can't seem to find it, so I will do it again.

    10997RKC15
    Heavy 10 X 4ft.
    Catalog no. CLC187A
Shipped Dec 1st, 1959 to W. T. Wills Machinery Co. Los Angeles, CA
    Floor leg under drive.
    Bed DDB200R
    Headstock VHD201L
    Tailstock T104R
    Saddle S103R
    Compound rest C102R
    Apron A104R
    Gear box DTG107R
    Headstock Leg CLA106R
    Tailstock leg RLG100R

From the above numbers this originally had a camlock spindle, but somewhere along the line this was swapped for a 1-1/16" collet 2-1/4"X8 threaded spindle.

My dad bought this in the 1990's with no accessories. In 1999 he sent the bed back to SBL and had it reground. He added a taper attachment and a lever collet closer that he bought from Joe Bergamo. I have been collecting accessories off of ebay for a while and now have a pretty good set.

I now have the lathe completely torn down and am doing a major restoration.

Correction on the serial number I posted
The correct serial number is 133608. NOT 133603
    Catalog number is 117c
    16" with 6' bed

The other number stamped with my serial number is M.C.155 A-1
I have been told that this number is a Maritime Commission number. This hasn't been verified. I did find a tag that says the lathe has met the standards of the war production board. So I guess it was government property. I will be ordering the data tag for more information.

Do I need to email the serial number information to mr. Wells to get it on the list on his website?
    Thanks Mike

I bought a Southbend lathe back in September, and just starting to address some wiring issues. The gentleman that I got it from had purchased it about 20 years ago from a local machine shop, and he used it for making gun parts until his health went south. It is a 14 1/2" 6' bed. Cat# 8183C Serial# 113429

Not sure if you're helping people with serial numbers or if this is a "pay for service" but I'll try.....I have a 10K which I got a couple of months ago, serial number on bed is 28505KAR7. The R is not stamped very deep, so I think that's what I'm seeing. It's a Model A, CL 8607A, with a 4' bed. Any help would be appreciated!

Looks like 1972. Could your catalogue # be 8670A instead of 8607? Looks like a "toolroom" model (precision leadscrew). PB

Default SB Serial Number Master List

    Hi Guys,
I need a little help here. We're picking up a 9A SB in a few weeks. I know I've seen the master list of all South Bends that Steve collected, somewhere, but I can't find it now. Where did it go?
    This is a CL644(A?) Serial #49365NAR10.
    Thanks for the assistance.

    Payson.

I have a South Bend 13" model CL175C. The serial# is 8211TKX14. As far as I can tell it was made in 1960.
I was told that it was originally purchased by Amoco (now BP).
I plan on getting a copy of the card from South Bend. When I do, I will update you with more info.

Hey Flute Maker I'd love to see a pic of that 9A you're getting. I recently acquired a 9A serial #51898 which according to what I can find out is around 1932. I haven't seen too many like it. It has really delicate feet compared to other 9's I've seen. Much prettier imho. Pics of mine will be forthcoming when I can.

    I have SB9A, Cat#CL644Z, SN34436NAR9
Interesting detail about this unit is that it has inventory sticker indicating that at some point it was owned by A.V. Roe Canada Ltd. The inventory number is 01-13894. I dated to have been manufactured by SB around 1948.
Based on those two pieces of info it is possible it have been used to make some parts for Avro Arrow. Canadians will understand what that means.

Your 1933 serial number is prior to the Workshop series lathes.
The 9 inch models in your SN range would be:
    9" "O" series
    9" "O" series, Junior
    9" Toolmaker
