    Progress slowed a bit since I picked up a big old Wilton C2 vise that needed some attention. Sort of overdid it a bit with "restoring it" but I figured I will be using it a lot as I move forward with the lathe. I did have a question about my lathe though. Is there supposed to be a cover here?

    They weren't always there, but would be an easy add. I may even have an extra kicking around in my donor parts bin somewhere.

    BTW, don't let the extra "bump" on the bullgear cover throw you off. That's not from the factory. It's my own design, a cast iron cover to protect my analog tachometer pickup unit that counts bullgear teeth as they pass by below.

    I am getting to the business end of my lathe and got the gear cover off and found a damaged tooth on the main tumbler gearbox gear. Also I have questions about the misalignment of the gears shown below? Do I need to address the alignment? How about the bad tooth?

    Well the lack of response put me in the mood to search out a replacement gear. I saw one on ebay for a 14 1/2 lathe and the dims seemed to match so I went for it and it looks right! I haven't checked the bore dia of the one on the machine but the teeth and OD are a match!

    I tried to start following the book I bought to renovate my lathe...or at least go through the wick replacement and some cleaning and hit a snag right off the bat. My 16" looks nothing like the reference pictures in the book. I want to remove the first lower assembly of gears but do not see directions of how to get the big gear off the bottom! I am assuming that this is step one and is not shown in that book! I can't be the first to have this issue so if someone has a link to a video or a thread about how to take it off I would appreciate it. I will post pics to help my quest tomorrow.

    look at the parts diagram, I believe it will answer your questions.

    BTW- Your lead gear looks like it needs a spacer behind it.

    I was all set up to just drone ahead and follow the book word for word but I suspect you are right that there will be thinking involved! LOL
    For me I am looking at a damaged gear that I want to remove so I can get to the gear train below it, and unsure how to best do it? Did someone try before me and that is why the tooth is damaged? I also want to make sure that it isn't a left hand thread! The book says all nuts are right hand thread unless specified then the omission creates some doubt.

    Is the correct way to put a strap wrench on the gear OD and use a big breaker bar on that nut? or
    Do the holes in that gear serve as a way to hold it by use of a dowel/rod/heavy screwdriver through one of the holes?
    Is there a "special" tool?

    I realize I could be over thinking it but I don't want to make a costly mistake right off the bat.

    I am thinking that maybe someone purposely moved the gear to clear that damaged tooth area. I will be correcting this upon re-assembly.

    i didn't even see the broken tooth! shame on me.
    i would feel better with a replacement too.
    fix the old one later and have a spare.

    as for removing the old gear getting the nut off was never a problem I ran into, but erring on the side of caution i think your strap wrench is a good plan if it seems stiff.

    can you put the sliding gear "in between" with it free spinning so no stress on it or any other gears while you remove the nut? or drop.the banjo out of mesh.

    Strap wrench did the trick but it was a tough cookie!

    We use impact wrench with the heat held with rag...not engaged.

    Zips off fast.

    Ahh, no impact wrench in my shop. I will be looking for a torque value when I put it on too! lol

    Just stumbled onto your thread. Great score. I just finished my 16/24. I did a bunch of the same things you did. Ask away if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer "How I did that"

    Thanks, I have a bent handle on my main cross feed that I want to fix or replace but yours looked pretty rough. Is it in better shape than the pictures made it look? I am going for a near new appearance on the parts of the lathe that I touch.

    I am having a tough time with the reverse gear assembly. I got most of it apart but I am having a heck of a time with pressing out the last main shaft. I am being cautious with it of course and I haven't been able to remove the shaft key either. Has anyone seen a nice video or a write up of this work? Thanks very much for any help.

    Ha quoting myself now but I made progress today with a 20 ton press to get that reverse main gear shaft out! It was really in there, came loose with a boom, should be fun putting it back. That stepped key was a pain too. I resorted to clamping it with some vice-grips and then prying on the pliers to get it to move and repeat until it was free. I will now need to clean it up a bit before re-use but i think it should be OK.

    I am looking for help on what to do with these galled surfaces! This is the reverse gear assembly main gear and the handle/base that holds the gears. There was no felt in the main gear section so I dont know what might have caused this condition other than heat and maybe some contamination building up over time. The crud I took out of the keyway slot and shaft releif grooves was the consistency of fine silted mud. I see what looks like a lodged chip in the face of the gear too. Help, I dont have much by the way of things to clean this up...that is what this lathe is for!! LOL

    Default Gear Pressed Out and Damage Found

    This is what I have going on to try and remedy. I am looking for any help. Is there an easy fix here to clean up this surface galling? Can I add some kind of thin washer here in lieu of being able to machine this flat. I have no mill or surface grinder. Can I maybe whetstone the high spots down or???

    Default The Main Gear has some damage too

    Here is the main gear I got out of the assy. No felt was left in it but my main worry now is the rough surface. Can I use it if I clean up the ridges? I have a small surface table block I could clean up the face by rubbing this on some flat media paper or an oilstone but I dont know if that is ok. There appears to be an embedded chip in the face too. I haven't tried to remove it I wanted to get some advice here first. Thanks for any input or suggestions of how to proceed.

    The other side of this gear has some interesting features too.
    Has anyone seen marks like these on a gear? It's the outer most face of the assembly that mates with the keeper nut on the shaft. It looks intentional because of how uniform it is. Oil retention or damage? Maybe because the stuck chip on the other side and forcing it into the nut over time?

    The marking on the face opposite the galling is from a gear running next to it.
