I have an opportunity to get some NOS South Bend 5C collets.

Who manufactured the South Bend Collets? South Bend, Hardinge ??

Is there a spec sheet on TIR for them?

Thanks

Bob

I'm sure that over the years the maker of South Bend branded collets has varied. I do know that in the mid-to-late 1980's I bought a set of 5C collets from South Bend, sizes 1/16" through 1" (by 1/16's). They are marked "S.B.L.", "Germany", "5C" and the size. My SBL accessories catalogue from back then doesn't say anything about TIR.

My old 13” SBL uses 2A collets. They are rare so I have collected them all over. The nicest ones I have are Royals that also say South Bend on them. I even have two Rivets.

One of the issues I found with SB collets is that they are just touch too big to work in a Hardinge. Draw tube won't thread on. I looked into this several years ago, apparently Hardinge made a change to make theirs slightly smaller. Why??

To use an old line ,because they could. They dont want you using flea market colletts. Its money out of their pocket.
I have a starrett thread comparator micrometer. When you start looking at collets with it it is very revealing.
