I am doing a tear down cleanup of my newly acquired circa 1981 South Bend Heavy 10L which has a D1-4 spindle.

I backed out the locking cams and found the 3 detents badly damaged/ springs in pieces. I ordered the replacement parts from Grizzly.

My question is when I go back in with the new parts what or how do you properly set them ?

Lathe is in really good shape I am only cleaning it and replacing small obvious issues.

Thanks for any help,

Tom

There’s nothing to adjust on the spindle. Make sure the detents fall into place and tighten the hex key bolts.

If adjustments are needed they are made screwing the mating stud in or out of your chosen spindle accessory. Make sure they (cams) go about 2/3 to 3/4 of a turn and snug up good when mated properly.

I think the cams need to lock up between 3and 6 o’clock, so that’s 1/4-1/2 turn. If these go past 1/2 turn, they go around and just hit the back of the studs, doing no work holding the attachment on.
