Tailstock handwheel installation

I have just finished rebuilding a Heavy 10. I can not seem to figure out the proper way to reinstall the handwheel on the tailstock. I have the version with a threaded shaft that uses a small pin between the wheel and shaft. I can not get the pin to drive into the hole between the wheel and shaft. is there a trick?

The HEAVY 10 has what’s called a “Dutchman Key” (a straight pin use as a key)
If you are using the same Handwheel and screw, the half-holes should line up. They were machined together. If they aren’t a matched set, you will have to drill a new hole(keyway)
