Tailstock Tool?

I've been staring at this "tool" for decades in the lathe drawer, but for the life of me, can't figure
out what it is or what it does. I only assume its for use in the tailstock. It doesn't spin.
Any ideas? Custom piece? Internal pipe center? Henweigh?

It is a "crotch"center normally use for drilling a hole in the side of a round item with a drill bit held in the headstock.

I have seen it referred to as a "crotch center".

It is used for crossdrilling a shaft with a drill chucked in the lathe spindle,

and the shaft held in the v-groove and fed onto the drill with the tailstock.

Align the holes in your two gear shafts on the reversing gear assembly upward. The hole slopes downward toward the felts, letting the oil get to the felts, then the shafts.

Thanks for mentioning that; it was on my list. I noticed that after getting the nut tightened (the shaft did
turn during) so knew they were prob going to be off. I decided to first set it into the lathe to see where "true"
vertical was. Good experienced eyes!
