I've just purchased an old Soutbend Lathe, and trying to figure out what it is, and how much it weighs to get it moved into my shop.

The serial # is G27675.

Best I can tell it's a 16(?) x 72 gap bed. It seems like it's about 1922, it has the power cross feed apron, came with a full set of change gears, steady rest, 4 jaw chuck, and a box of other plates and HSS and stuff. Everything seems reasonably tight, and I'm told it was running when the previous owner passed away. Seems like a fun restoration project, and hopefully will get myself a good working lathe out of it. Anyone with any more information would be appreciated, I have an email in to SB to see if they have a serial card available for it, but I'm not hopeful as it's almost guaranteed to be pre-1929.

Cheers.

Any feedback on what I'm getting myself into here would be appreciated :)

Tomorrow is the big day! She's coming home with me!!!!!

Went today, and got it onto dunnage with the legs removed ready to get it moved. Did some more investigating, turns out it's a 13"x8' model. Super excitied! Will post more pictures of the move, and as I start getting into the restoration.

Been a bit, but got the lathe back to the garage, currently been soaking it in diesel to loosen all the crud, and get under some of the rusty spots before going ham on the cleaning.

Now I need to pull it out from the wall a bit, and find some bolts to mount the countershaft and motor to the back side of the lathe. I'm thinking I'll probably replace the planks on the motor mount, they're all cracked, and I have some nice rough fir I can make a new top out of.

More to come!

Is the gap bed section in that container? I think its I see it in there. that is a nice feature.
Not much paint to strip

Yes the gap bed came with it. Unfortunately it's more neglected than the rest of the lathe, will need to see how it cleans up. While going through all the items that came with it I also made an amazing discovery, it came with the milling attachment and a spindle mounted indexed end mill of sorts that uses has inserts. I've never seen one before, I'll take some pictures and hopefully someone can help identify it.

If you have surface rust on the ways a razor blade will do a nice job of shaving it off. You just have to get it at the right angle. You may want to carefully file off any nicks first.
Good luck.
