Unusual? Raised South Bend Lathe

I was just killing some time looking at machines on CL and came across a listing for an unusual (I've never seen one) raised South Bend, it looks factory, but maybe not? Was this a common feature? Interesting the way they did the tail stock riser, looks like it could be used to extend C-C length. I don't have room for it, so if someone else is interested go for it, standard disclaimer, I don't have anything to do with it.

Is this how they make a 24"? Look at that faceplate underneath! I would not want to push that tail stock around.

These are known as a 16/24. It basically a 16", but head stock, tail stock, and too l post are on risers.

What’s better! They actually made 3 versions of that sb16,

A 16
A 24
AND A 32!!!!

And as tall as 42 based on the Series O 24" - for bus and truck drum turning with tire mounted

Here is the "regular" Series O 24" - up to well over 5000 Lbs



42" is on page 80 and 81 here circa 1930

Or swapping chucks, face plates and pretty much anything above the standard 16” swing!!

I have only seen that long TS base on machines made for the Navy.

No, I don’t know for sure. They didn’t make any like that while I was there. They sold a lot of 16” to the Navy while I was there, including ones for submarines.
