Hello everyone! Im new to machining, and im having a blast w/ my south bend 13". However, when I received the lathe, the gib for the top/tool slide is buggered up, so i bought a cut/notch yourself gib.

It would be awesome if someone here could inform me on where the notch should be placed on the new gib, and the dimensions of the notch. Also, how should i cut the notch?

A working tool slide would be dope! I will post some pictures later tonight.

Thank you

Is it the cross slide or the compound gib? What style of 13? Older small dial, or newer large dial? I have a 1966 CL145 (large dial) that I can get gib measurements from if that is the same as yours.

Hi, it's the compound gib. My 13 was made in 80 which makes it a small dial right? Thank you

You know, a picture is worth a thousand words - especially if you don't know how to describe something.

Also, in 1980, all dials were the larger version.

And again, I thought that the gibs on a 13" were tapered, just like on the 10". Where did you get a "cut-it-yourself" tapered gib blank?

Where are you in Georgia? I'm in Savannah.
I have 1941 13, but I doubt the gib changed on the compound. I believe I also have a spare small dial compound in the rathole.

Looks like the slot is 0.250 wide and 6.750 to 7.000 from the end.

Here are some pics of mine:

I took a bunch more pictures if you need any other information.

You scrape the gib in yet? It moves inward drastically for just a small amount of scraping. You'll want to do that before you cut the notch.
