Thank You
I was hoping it might have been a indication as to flame harden ways before they put the label on it where it could be seen...

Hmm I don’t think there’s any identifiers other than the label for that. But if there’s no major wear to it, lubricate it properly and you’ll be fine.

yea I would have bought it however I thought it was a bit high...
it did not come with the live center or any collets and collet tools...
After coming home I looked to see what these tools on average would cost and another 600-800 and felt after that cost I would wait...

Hi Paul,
The 8 signifies the revision number of the lathe Series. When there was a significant revision or feature added,
the revision number advanced. This can be used as somewhat of a date indicator when looking for a lathe. The higher the
revision number, the younger the lathe is. The last Heavy Ten revision numbers are 16 I believe in the fall of 1968, then they dropped off. Becoming "RKX" only, then in 1975, "R" only.
You can see numbers by date here:

South Bend Lathe Serial Numbers

Scroll way down past 186514, then keep going past the N's and K lathes then Heavy Ten's start as "R"
