Mornin,

I don’t do much brass, and all of a sudden I have brass sitting on the bench for a job. I’m tooled up for steel, so I don’t have much in the name of 3 flute endmills.

Yet I keep seeing various points that 4 flute is a bad idea for brass. I assume they gum up easily? Do I increase the feed and take tiny cuts so it whips the chip out before it heats up? I’m about to just hit cycle start and try what I got, but I’d love to hear why it’s a dumb idea from you guys.

Depends on the brass. 360 will not gum up unless something weird is happening. There are a zillion different brass/bronze alloys though. What alloy do you have?

Regards.

Mike

We cut 360 with 4-Flute endmills all the time. Hit the green button.

We have never had it gum up, it's so free cutting I would think it's impossible to screw it up. That's not to say someones not going to wander in here and give us their war story in a few minutes. But I would think they would have had to do something dumb to achieve that.
