I believe a Sjogren #1 chuck takes Hardinge 1J collets, not 5C collets. The mount looks like a long taper, possibly L00. You need to state the thread diameter and pitch so people can tell what it is.

Anyway, pick-up only in Oregon kind of limits the buyer pool.

I know what you are saying about the pickup only thing. I wish I could change that. I know we'd get more if we could ship.

I grabbed a 5c collet and mounted it in the Sjogren. Threads matched and seemed to seat correctly. How close is the 1j to a 5c?

I'll post the thread details tomorrow. Looks like it has an interchangeable back plate but I can take a closer look if someone is interested.

The 1J collet has the same thread and body diameter as the 5C, but is 9/32" shorter. The Hardinge collet list does not list head angles, so I don't know if they are the same.

Looking at my old catalogs, it appears that a Sjogren chuck marked NO1 would take 1J collets. I seldom see 1J collets for sale. By 1980, they had stopped making the No. 1 chuck and replaced it with a true 5C collet chuck that would be marked NO5C. The L-mount Sjogren chucks do have separate adapter plates.

Here is a picture of a Sjogren 5C chuck showing the marking. The AX means it has the rare feature of a 4 degree taper nose for mounting Hardinge step chuck closers.

If you stick a 5C in it, and it's supposed to take 1J, you will find that it will thread in, but when you try to close it, it won't completely close.

I agree with Larry - I think it's a 1J.

A 5C definitely works in this chuck. Here are three pictures. Top one has a 5/8 5c collet. Second has a 5/8 5C collet holding a 5/8 end mill. Tightening by hand, without the chuck mounted can hold the endmill solidly, quarter turn releases the EM. Last picture is a close up of the model #. Perhaps this chuck was modified or is old enough that model #'s were different. Can't say.

Threads are 4.5 x 6tpi so L0

Do you know what lathe it goes to by any chance?

There are zero bids on it at the moment. I'd like to see it get bought. PM me and I might be able to take it to my shop and ship it when I get some time.

I've bought out of state from Public Surplus and had UPS pick up the item and ship it to me. You do need to give ups a good weight and dimensional estimate and they can give you an idea of the cost.
