Managed to find a chuck to fit the long-obsolete threaded spindle on my Warner & Swasey No.2 turret lathe. But, of course, it came without any top jaws. I whipped up this drawing based on the chart from the W&S "Tools" book:

I found a couple potential candidates on eBay, but the sellers are asking more than I paid for the chuck itself. Hoping somebody here might have a set gathering dust in a drawer for maybe a bit less. :D

Worth asking. :)

(And yes, I will be whipping up likely several pairs of both steel and aluminum soft jaws, and to be honest, those will likely get the most use anyway. But I'd like to have some hard jaws for those one-off jobs.)

Thanks!
Doc.

Take a set of soft jaws and drill & tap for the swivel gripper pads.
Have done this a few times.

It's a turret lathe. I'm sure I will eventually have several sets of soft jaws. :D

But as I said, for the occasional one-off job, I'd like to also have standard hard jaws if at all possible.

I think you are looking for a set of three 10 inch American Standard tongue and groove hard top jaws. Jaw dimensions here:

Hard top jaws easily found at new retail, under $300.

AJAX CAS10HJ2 American Standard Tongue and Groove Hard Top Jaws for BISON Scroll Chuck 10 inch 3-Jaw 3 Piece Set 7-883-310 or Hard Chuck Jaws - American Standard Tongue & Groove - Chucks 10" inches - Part # TG-100HJ2-BI | Industrial Tool & Supply

You might get lucky on eBay with a patient search. Right now, I just see a set of four with 90 degree ends, but the price is only $99. They should work fine on a 3-jaw and you would have a spare jaw.

Or you could get a new Chinese chuck and use just the jaws for $141.

Isn't it nice when you find your old machine takes a current standard replacement part?

-Well, that's kind of the thing. There's two pair on eBay- some of the few that actually list any relevant dimensions- that look spot-on (key size, slot width, bolt spacing, OAL, etc.) but the seller is Mike Kandu, wants $300 a set, and they're clearly well-used, and there's no "make offer" option.

Sorry, but for $300, I'll stick with soft jaws 'til I can make a set of hard.

-It is. :D But I suspect it's more of a case of this manufacturer is one of the ones that MADE it a 'standard'.

While I doubt they 'invented' it, both Messrs. Warner and Swasey started out at Pratt & Whitney, and could very well have carried the 'standard' over from there.

And by the time my machine was made- sixty years and nearly half a million units later- the sheer number of them in use may have made it a standard.

Just go and use a different loo when the pitter-patter of tiny hooves approacheth thy blinder "6". Your coondingie will thank you!

"American Standard" means what is says it means. Tons of vendors list them as standard items, hard and soft. Mine a Hardinge 6". Two-jaw. Even nuisance-to-fab "claw" jaws can be had.

Contact Small Tools in Cleveland OH. They have racks and racks and racks of used W&S small parts and tooling. They have kind of a relationship with Gahr Machinery, who are specialists in rebuilding W&S. No idea on pricing, but I’m sure they have the jaws you need.

-They've been kind of my last resort plan on this. As above, jaws that should fit are not uncommon, I'm just trying to find a set for less than $200-$300. I'll pay full value if I have to, but I'm not in such a dire need I can't be patient to wait for a good deal.

I've also been meaning to talk to them about some of the tools I'd like to find, but I've been waiting on a couple transactions with other PM'ers over some tools, to finish up first.

They’re honest folks and willing to deal quite a bit, at least from my experience. No affiliation other than being a satisfied customer.

-Oh, I know. I've already bought several hundred in tooling from them, including correct-for-this-model front and rear cross-slide tool posts (that still even have the wedges!) and bar turners that actually fit a #2 turret. (two-bolt rather than four.)

And Bill's been more than accommodating with shipping via USPS Flat Rate.

Of course, it was only after I'd made an offer on this chuck and had it accepted that I stopped to think that ST might have a complete chuck, with jaws, available. :D

Again, I figured I'd ask here and see if anyone had an old set in a drawer or something, and if not, work with other means.

Doc.

What? You mean $99 for a set that looks like new is not a good deal?

-No, I didn't miss it, but those are for a 4-jaw. :)

Again, this is not a time-crucial thing. It's not like I need jaws by Monday or anything. I figure I've got at least another couple of weeks before I can even start making chips, and the first handful of jobs I have lined up will all be collet work.

Point in fact, I don't have any work on the lists yet that will even need a chuck- as I said, I really only picked it up 'just in case'.

As such, I have the leeway to wait for a good deal on the correct jaws, and don't need to grab the first available whatever that I can afford. :D

WoW !

Try to help a guy out and Poof !.....
Back on ignore you go.

Bill at Small Tools had a set of original (used) W&S jaws for a whopping $100, which is about what I was hoping to spend. :D

I also priced some steel to make soft jaws, at about $36 including cut charges, but an eBay seller has premachined steel soft jaws ready-to-go at $45 with free shipping, so that's kind of a no-brainer, there. :D

Thanks to everyone who offered help and advice!
