Customer has a 480 volt 3 phase iron worker. PO used a Auto Transformer primary 480, secondary 208 , fed backwards. It worked, but will it work on a RFC with the wild leg. Greatly appreciate any information.

Will work but most likely not to the electric code, not allowed in most of the states but I don't know about Canada...

If you are hooking up the 208 winding to the 240v line in canada the transformer will run a bit hot, and will deliver about 550 volts no load, but who cares.
Lot of demand placed on the single phase transformer feeding both the rpc and the load, but a lot of the reactive current can be canceled out with run caps

But wouldn’t a 460 volt motor be damaged wired to 550.

Under load the voltage will drop so it may or may not run hot. But not burn out territory.
