Clausing drill press 480 to 240?

I bought this gang drill on a cast iron base, thinking i could change it to 240v and use in my barn. I looked at motor wiring, found the directions (9 wires),,no problem. It has a switch to go to tap mode, then use foot switch to reverse.

I found a transformer in the elect cabinet that shows putting a jumper to go to 240, but then the rest of that stuff in there, wow!

Is the motors and the transformer all i do? I have no idea what most of that stuff does.

If it looks like gobblygook on the inside instead of transformers, contactors, etc, then I would recommend getting an electrician to convert it to 220v 3ph for you. It’s not super cheap, but if your time has a value greater than $0/hr, the couple hundred bucks to have someone else do it might be worth it. It might be even cheaper because you can bring the DP to the electrician.

Naw,,,that sounds too easy. Anybody could do that. I could rip all that stuff out and wire straight to motors for 240, but it sounds like more fun to try and make it all work with the pedals and stuff.

The recommendation of an electrician was an attempt to have you keep all the bells and whistles. That box looks professionally wired and it shouldn’t take them long to convert it.

If the point is to learn, then I would put it back to how it was and run it at 480V.

Learn how it was designed to operate, with it's PLC control and tapping function, Do you need or desire the features it has, does it function correctly?

You can create a 480 supply from a 230 supply, with a couple small 1Φ transformers. Now that's learning.

Then you can decide what to do from there.
