    Once again, if the third phase voltage was correct but it only drew 1/2 the current, the phase angle was wrong. An oscilloscope would show it. A while back some people were having problems with a CNC mill. I had done some checks on it and when someone told the factory rep that we knew the encoder was good, he asked how we could know that. "We checked it with an oscilloscope." The rep said that was the only time a customer had done that. Personally, going through life without one would be like being blind.

    Richardson mentions RotoPhase converters. I ran on one for a couple of years until I could get real three phase. Let's just say that I was less than impressed.

    a combination of both could be better, given that transformers are cheap.

    use an auto transformer in series with a capacitor to boost the voltage of an idler, rather than capacitors only.
