I'm just starting to research rotary phase convertors. I moved from my old shop with 3 phase to my garage which does not have 3 phase. I've sold off about 1/2 my machines and kept the work horses that I regularly use. I'm a one man show my biggest machine is a Haas TM2. I think it has a 7.5 hp motor. Also have Hardinge HLVH & DV59, Victor 1640, Bidgeport mill, Victor 20" throat vert band saw. I would say total power draw would be the Haas plus one other machine. Figuring that would be the Victor ( I think it has a 5 or 7 hp motor )would a 30 hp phase convertor be enough?

Thanks
Tim

A good, conservative rule of thumb is to use an idler double the HP of the load. You can also go double FLA if you know your load in amps, not horsepower (equipment with heaters and servos)
