DC motor? Has brushes, commutator, wound armature. Variac (AC) or rheostat (DC) with big lever for speed control on operator side, but what is in the cage on the other side of motor? Looks too small to be a rectifier to make DC from commercial power.
I like the screw in fuse in a hanging light socket under that cage.
