Vintage Motor Bearing Box Lubrication Packing Material?

I’m not sure this is the appropriate forum for this question. If not please direct me to proper one.

I am refurbing my lathe from 1943. One of the tasks is to clean out the neglected 3/4 hp, 220/440 VAC motor.

I took the motor end bells off and, in preparation for scrubbing and cleaning, pulled opened the ports on the sleeve bearing lubrication boxes. Inside these boxes I found what appear to be skeins of wool yarn to hold the oil.

What should I use to replace this bearing box packing material? Should I go to the local fabric shop or hobby shop and by some wool yarn to make new skeins for the bearing boxes? Perhaps stuff them with loose felt, wool or cotton?

Thank you for any replies,

Vladymere

Amazing that stuff has lasted.

It's pretty simple to put everything back as it was. I would think about boring a hole in each end bell to fit a modern bearing.

Fellows,

I thank you for your responses.

It seems to be OK really. Not broken or damaged, sound and solid.

I think I will rinse the skeins in mineral spirits and dry them, apply some oil and stuff them back in the end bells oil reservoir boxes.
