What do contactor labels A.V. and A.R. mean?

This is on a 1952 CVA 1A toolroom lathe.

These are not the original wires, contactors nor overload of course. One contactor is for starting the motor forward and the other for reverse. The switch is controlled from the levers right of the apron and headstock. The lathe is missing an emergency stop button and controls for the coolant pump. Will be adding those.

It just bugs me that I cannot make sense of the letters on the auxiliary relays. Any good reason for these letters in particular?
