When connecting up 24VDC panel lights on a CNC machine does it matter if one uses

ground versus negative on the appropriate terminal ? (with the other terminal obviously being 24VDC positive.....on a Makino with Fanuc control if it matters)

Tests produces identical end results in that the light works either way, using negative or ground, but wondering if there is any danger in using the machine ground for such purposes ?

If curious, this is just a light to show a pneumatic valve is in the "on" position.
 
Only place where near metal used is automotive...

Best to have both hot and return whenever possible as it is just better practice.

With anything not automotive the chassis grounding is usually reserved for safety grounding and at a single point usually at distribution the return is attached to ground.

It can get interesting if multiple voltages present if chassis grounding used.

Yes it could work but should not be done if it can be avoided.

Run a wire, Than you know there is no issue with anything. Otherwise any bolted joint, etc can foul it up and be hard to trace.
