I just got a 2HP Baldor motor 220, 1 phase. There are eight wires in the box, and a wiring diagram on the box, easy enough as all of the wires are numbered, 3-4 6-7 etc for 220, CCW rotation. Problem ...one wire is supposed to go to "J". I'm guessing this is chassis ground but I wanted to check with someone here first before I put power to it.

usually Baldor motors have a thermostat with two brown leads that are labeled J. This is a normally closed click switch that opens when the motor exceeds normal operating temperature.

If you have the part# for the motor, you can download the connection diagram from www.baldor.com

Ah, that makes sense. I must not have that thermostat. I have no brown leads labled J.

Figure I should just cap that lead?

Is that an extra item on some motors?
