I have a chance to buy a W&S 1a. Need following info.

Does it come with lead screw

How does it work with die heads for threading

Does the saddle have a float position for pulling itself in when threading with a die head.

Which kinds of threads can it do.

Unlikely - but a look will tell. These are referred to as chasing attachments.

How does it work with die heads for threading

Very nicely, as W&S intended and using the intended die heads that had a sliding movement independent of saddle movement for at least the first several threads, but probably impractical for work smaller than intended. This also assumes machine is in good condition with no binding in saddle movement

Does the saddle have a float position for pulling itself in when threading with a die head.

Yes, any time the feed is disengaged - but see above about type of die head required

Seller will be able to tell you. Chasing attachment consisted of factory applied attachments to saddle apron and carriage apron that used short "lead screw" elements for every pitch thread you intended to cut.

Even if it has CAs applied, it would be generally worthless to you unless it has a collection of the short lead screw elements containing the thread pitches you were interested in cutting.

It is pretty hard to generalize about W/S A-type features. A-types were pretty much built with options of the customer's choosing. You have to look at the machine in question to see what it has. A-types sold for oilfield work usually had cross sliding hex turrets, full lenght leadscrews and quick change gear boxes. The other type threading is known as leader and follower type. You have to have a set of leader and follower for each pitch.
