Wondering why W & S calls most of their ram type TL's UNIVERSAL I guess I could see calling somthing with a cross sliding turret "universal" ...perhaps but a common mediun sized ram type #3 M-1200 and M-2200 #4 M-2240 ?

OK if found it...on the vintagemachinery.org repository of machine manuals , in Warner&Swaseys's most excellent publication

"Getting the Most out of your Turret Lathe " page 17

UNIVRSAL denotes powerfeed in four directions of the cross slide. Small turret lathes may have only hand feed cross slide and therefore are not classed as universal

From 1934 (another way of saying what is posted in Post #5:))

The distinctive feature of the No. 4 Universal Turret Lathe is the Universal cross slide carriage which provides power longitudinal feeds either left or right, and power cross feeds are also provided for either direction
