Default W & S calls most of their ram type TL's UNIVERSAL ....why ?

Wondering why W & S calls most of their ram type TL's UNIVERSAL I guess I could see calling somthing with a cross sliding turret "universal" ...perhaps but a common mediun sized ram type #3 M-1200 and M-2200 #4 M-2240 ?

Perhaps to differentiate them from the #2 that has no carriage?

The definitive answer is probably lost to history, but your thought is plausible.
